25.10.2019. The prefecture Nouvelle Aquitaine has communicated the opening dates of the glass eel fishery:

• 01 November – Pyrenees-Atlantiques, Les Landes

• 15 November – Gironde and Charente-Maritime

Glass eel fishing is particularly regulated and controlled since organized gangs supply glass eels to illegal but profitable businesses. The price of a kilo of glass eels can reach 4000 euros on the Asian market. The prefecture reports, that since the beginning of the year, 1314 kilos of glass eels have been seized, with a resale value of 500,000 euros on the legal market. In 2018 there were only 613 kilos seized over the whole year.

For information, criminal sanctions for poachers are severe: they can range from two to seven years’ imprisonment and from 150,000 to 750,000 euros if the offence is committed on the black market. This year, the Bordeaux criminal court handed down firm prison sentences against poachers.
